* Prisoner of Zenda -Anthony Hope Hawkins -

116292This novel is about Rudolf Rassendyll, the 2nd son of an English Earl -- the late Earl of Burlesdon & Baron of Rassendyll. There has been a red headed Rassendyll in every gerneration of the Rassendylls since the visit of Prince Rudolf of Ruritania. Prince Rudolf visited England in 1733.

He was a tall handsome fellow with an unusually long sharp straight nose and red hair. The nose & hair typlified his house -- the Elphbergs.

Before Prince Rudolf left England, he had a duel with James, the 5th Earl of Burlesdon, 22nd baron of Rassendyll. After the duel, Prince Rudolf was wisked out of England & soon assumed the throne of Ruritania as Rudolf III. His direct line has ruled ever since. James died 6 months later and his wife, Countess Amelia, 2 months later, gave birth to the heir to the title & estates of Burlesdon. Thus there has been one red headed blue eyed Rassendyll in every generation since and it has been passed down that Rassendylls should avoid travelling to Ruritania.

Five generations later, our story begins with Rudolf Rassendyll, aged 29, who decides to go to Strelsau to see the current prince crowned king of Ruritania. Rudolf Rassendyll finds that the heir apparent not only is named Rudolf but looks like him. The red hair is central to the story. This is a wonderful story for red headed people who like nobility, kings, look alikes, & entrigue.

And I look across the water
And I think of all the things, what you're doing
And in my head I make a picture

:CHORUS:
Cos since I've come on home,
Well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why won't you come on over Valerie?

Did you have to go to jail,
Put your house up on for sale, did you get a good lawyer?
I hope you didn't catch a tan,
I hope you'll find the right man who'll fix it for ya
And are you shoppin' anywhere,
Changed the colour of you hair, are you busy?
And did you have to pay the fine
You were dodging all the time, are you still dizzy?

Well sometimes I go out by myself

* John Collier "Lilith"

* Prince Harry single again

Chelsy Clarence House has refused to comment on reports that Prince Harry has split from his girlfriend.

The News of the World reported that Chelsy Davy had ended their three-year relationship after the prince missed her 22nd birthday party to go to the Rugby World Cup final in Paris.

Miss Davy, who was born in Zimbabwe, had also become sick of the prince's playboy lifestyle and lack of commitment to her, the newspaper said.

Immediately after the split, Harry was back at Amika, partying hard with a group of five friends on Friday night – one of whom bore a remarkable resemblance to his old friend, TV presenter Natalie Pinkham. "She looked very pretty," said one onlooker.

He was overheard boasting that he planned to get "as drunk as possible" and ran up a £2,500 bar bill in only a few hours. Other guests noticed an ice bucket filled with a magnum of Dom Perignon champagne, at a cost of £400 a bottle.

Meanwhile Chelsy was on the other side of London, partying with friends from Leeds, where she is studying for her law postgraduate degree.

Explaining how she keeps her youthful looks the actress states “I wear sunscreen, and I don’t smoke. I take care of myself. And I’m very proud to say that.” Whatever her trick, it's definitely working!

We've always loved Nicole's beautiful red hair and she's not the only star working the look.

* Frecklefaced Strawberry - Julianne Moore -

Actress Julianne Moore has a new out—her first actually, and it is a children’s book called Freckleface Strawberry.

Moore mentions in a USA Today article that the book is based on real life experiences from when she was young, and how the kids used to call her “Frecklefaced Strawberry” when she was young.

If you go to the article, you can even see what the young Julianne Moore looked like. The book is about a 7 year old girl who just as a bad case of freckles and needs to learn to live with it.

The article also features a short interview with the, and when asked if she had plans for more books, she said, “I’m hoping it's the beginning of a series with the same character. I have an option for the second book and a draft of the third.”

She also admitted to there being a slight “embarrassment” of being yet another writing a children’s book. But Moore said she wanted to do it because she “loved books as a kid” as well as “loving them now.”

* Ginger project - Jennifer Wicks -

‘Ginger’ is a book project looking at the genetics, geographical and social attitudes towards red hair. A percentage of book profits and all proceeds from the exhibition will go toward the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

I’m a photographer and doing a book on the subject of red hair - ginger, titian, strawberry blonde, orange however you want to describe this hair colouring that gets such a hard time in England (not ncessarily Scotland, Wales or Ireland). The book will look at the genetic and geographical aspects of red hair along with social attitudes towards this hair colour in the UK. It will also culminate in an exhibition and all proceedes of which will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and 10% of book profits will also be donated to them. Although red hair and CF aren’t connected they are both recessive genes and therefore both parents have to pass the gene on. My six year old nephew is a red head and has CF which is why I jumped at the chance of doing this… need I say any more.

So far the build up has been pretty interesting, for me anyway, and I’ve realised that we humaniods ‘take the piss’ magnificantly, especially out of minority groups (red-heads being a minority especially in England). Is it a tribal thing or are we just arse-holes? Does it really trace back to Vikings or English fighting the Scottish or is there more to it? Why do red-heads seem to steer well clear of other red-heads when picking a mate, do they really feel it’s all a bit too insestuous or is there a biological reason to ensure survival? Well, what ever the reason I’m sure I’ll figure it out and you’ll be able to see and read about it in the book.

I’ve met a whole load of beautifully ginger haired people (of different shades) whilst researching and recruiting for the book, but not enough, I need more. Meeting these individuals has actually been quite hillarious at times; my local pub (and my main meeting point when vetting and grilling) now believes I have a ‘thing’ for red-heads (and also both genders I’m sure) and all the bar staff give me a sly little wink and complementary half-a-larger when I now go in.

I’m obviously loving the free beer so won’t come clean (and anyway, maybe I do love a red-head). It’s also thrown up the issue of how people actually see themselves. A girl (who I had not met previously) showed up to the shoot date with very ‘brown’ hair, but obviously believed that she constituted a red-head. Maybe she did have red tones but come on! And a guy whom I arranged to meet in said local and described himself on the phone as “wearing a blue jacket, glasses and obviously ginger”, was completely bald! He obviously had been ginger in the past but unfortunately for me to be able to illustrate ginger visually I kinda need hair. He did provide me with a great insight into being ginger though so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.

So… I started shooting last week in a studio in Loughborough Juction (near Brixton, South London) and have an eight week deadline. Images need to get to the designer just before Christmas so they can start working on the book.

Most people who have come forward and committed to a studio date have be great, one bloke grew a beard especially, how fantastic is that! And I’ve heard some funny stories (I met an Irish girl who made a lot of money out of American tourists who wanted their picture taken with her, fair play). It’s a voluntary commitment for a charity that needs extra support and it’s actually restored my faith in people a bit (or are red-heads just a superior race). If there are any more willing participants out there get in touch….. if there’s anyone out there reading this that is:-)

* Neanderthal man was a redhead, say scientists

Their manes of black hair and dark, thick-set features are the stuff of legend.

But some Neanderthals actually sported fiery red locks and pale skin, a study suggests.

Tests on the bones of the cavemen - who lived alongside our ancestors 30,000 years ago - show they carried the same genetic trait that makes Prince Harry, Mick Hucknall and Geri Halliwell redheads.

Neanderthals first moved to Europe from Africa around 350,000 years ago and settled across the continent.
Fossil experts have long suspected that they adapted to life in Europe by becoming paler.

A team of European researchers analysed DNA samples taken from the bones of two cavemen in Spain and Italy.

They focused on the MC1R gene which helps skin make the "sunscreen" pigment melanin.
In sunny climates, this gene protects the skin from burning.

But in colder parts of the world, there is no advantage in having darker skin. In fact, being fair-skinned helps the body produce more vitamin D.

The tests revealed the Neanderthals had a variant of MC1R which cuts melanin production.
Researcher Dr Michael Hofreiter, from the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, said: "If you have a variant with this low action in modern humans, you get classically Irish-looking red hair and pale skin."

He believes at least one in 100 Neanderthals would have had two copies of this 'ginger gene' - similar to the proportion of redheads in modern Europe.

Despite their brutish reputation, Neanderthals did not behave very differently to us.
They used stone tools and weapons, built homes, made clothes from furs and leather and wore jewellery.

The Neanderthals went extinct around 25,000 years ago, soon after humans arrived in Europe from Africa.

Whether the two species interbred is still a matter of hot debate and no one knows why the Neanderthals died out.

* Study says some Neanderthals may have been redheads

LONDON (Reuters) - Some Neanderthals may have had fair skin and red hair, giving them an appearance resembling modern Europeans, an international team of researchers said on Thursday.

The researchers homed in on the MC1R gene linked to hair and skin colour and used DNA analysis to find a variation that produced the same kind of pigmentation changes as in humans with red hair and pale skin.

The study, published in the journal Science, comes a week after another set of researchers looking at a different gene said Neanderthals may have been capable of sophisticated speech.

Taken together, the two studies are the first to extract nuclear DNA from Neanderthal remains and represent a new way to learn more about the extinct early humans, the researchers said. Nuclear DNA is the DNA in the nucleus of the cell that makes up nearly all the genetic information people carry.

Neanderthals were a dead-end offshoot of the human line who inhabited Europe and parts of west and central Asia. Research indicates they were expert tool-makers, used animal skins to keep warm and cared for each other.

Most researchers believe Neanderthals survived in Europe until the arrival of fully modern humans about 30,000 years ago although controversial findings last year suggested they might have survived until as recently as 24,000 years ago.

The team produced a DNA sequence from the fragmented Neanderthal MC1R gene to make a modified copy they could study in a test tube, the researchers said.

This allowed the team to determine that the gene produced the same level of the chemical melanin as in people with red hair and light skin. The variation itself was different than in modern humans but the result was the same.

Light skin would have been an evolutionary advantage for Neanderthals by allowing them to soak up more vitamin D from the sun in cloudy Europe, the researchers said.

The findings also provide important clues about Neanderthal and human evolution, and represent the first of many such experiments likely to use the same DNA technique to learn far more than could be gleaned from fossils alone, researchers said.

"We have always had a bottleneck on the number of fossils we can work on," Michael Hofreiter, an evolutionary biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, said in a telephone interview. "There will be more studies looking at specific genes that are interesting."

* Gingers extinct in 100 years, say scientists

REDHEADS are becoming rarer and could be extinct in 100 years, according to genetic scientists.
The current National Geographic magazine reports that less than two per cent of the world's population has natural red hair, created by a mutation in northern Europe thousands of years ago.

Global intermingling, which broadens the availability of possible partners, has reduced the chances of redheads meeting and producing little redheads of their own.

It takes only one red-haired parent to produce ginger-headed babies, but two redheads obviously create a much stronger possibility.

If the gingers really want to save themselves they should move to Scotland.

An estimated 40 per cent of Scots carry the red gene and 13 per cent actually have red hair.

Some experts say that redheads could be gone as early as 2060, but others say the gene can be dormant for generations before returning.

National Geographic says the gene at first had the beneficial effect of increasing the body's ability to make vitamin D from sunlight. However, today's carriers are more prone to skin cancer and have a higher sensitivity to heat and cold-related pain.

* Save the Redheads

Opening vrijdag 21 september in WEI vanaf 20u Mathildelaan 3 Eindhoven

* Baby born with a full head of Elvis-style ginger hair

Every parent hopes their baby will attract admiring glances.

But adorable as she is, Katie-Lee Webster receives attention for only one reason - her spectacular shock of ginger hair.

At only ten weeks old she already has the flowing locks of a child several times her age.

Her mother, Stephanie Pleasance, said: "Most people when they see a baby say 'Isn't she cute?'. When people see her, they say "Look at her hair!'."

Katie-Lee's father, Danny Webster, added: "No one we've met has ever seen anything like it - we're forever being stopped in the street and asked, 'Is that a wig?'."

Indeed, some observers could draw comparisons with Russ Abbot's screen character C U Jimmy, whose ginger toupee is as outrageous as his behaviour.

Katie-Lee's hair is, of course, natural. Her father, a print worker, is a redhead so there is no mystery as to where she gets it from.

He and Katie-Lee's mother, of Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, were born almost completely bald, but their first child has had her extraordinary head of hair since day one.

It's now more than 3in long.

Having such a head start can lead to problems.

Earlier this year Eden Lurie's hair was deemed too long and spiky when the four-month-old went to have her passport photo taken in Manchester.

Staff had to give her a virtual haircut on a computer so she did not fall foul of guidelines.

Jamie Hetherington from Northumberland caused a stir when he developed a natural Mohican look when he was four months old

Similarly, Charlie Zecca from Gloucester boasted a Beatle-style mop before his first haircut.

Aarzelend: ,,Het is leuk.

* My Boris Beckerlike: Tennis star's ex-wife is dating his doppelganger

His choice of women over the years has certainly been consistent.

Indeed, no fewer than five of Boris Becker's lovers have borne a striking similarity to his ex-wife, Barbara Feltus.

And now, it seems, she too has acquired a taste for lookalikes.

She has started dating Lapo Elkann, the heir to the Agnelli and Fiat cars fortune and a dead ringer for Becker.

Not only does the 30-year-old have a shock of red hair, his facial features are also similar to those of the former Wimbledon champion.

The couple were seen shopping in New York before going for a romantic meal - and Mr Elkann even appeared to be wearing Becker's favourite leather flat cap.

Barbara and Mr Elkann spent the day together in the city's Greenwich Village before returning to his apartment. Earlier this month they attended a fashion party in Berlin together.
Becker's eight-year marriage to Barbara was ended by the tennis player's notorious dalliance with a waitress in a broom cupboard at the Nobu restaurant in London.

As it turns out, Mr Elkann's past is also not without scandal. Two years ago, in an episode which left Italy stunned, the energetic and extrovert young heir was discovered in sordid circumstances, collapsed and clinging to life after a drugs overdose in the Turin apartment of two Brazilian trans-sexual prostitutes, one of whom was 53 years old.

It emerged that he had consumed a potentially lethal cocktail of drugs including cocaine, heroin and alcohol. He was quickly restored to health after a spell in rehab, but it took longer for the family name to recover.

Italian commentators were astounded that an Agnelli could, as one put it, "roll in the dust".
Eventually, though, the incident was forgotten and the dynasty resumed its place at the heart of Italian business life.

For his part, Becker also knows a thing or two about dating lookalikes.

After Barbara came five others who looked almost identical - Angela Ermakova (who Boris met in that broom cupboard in 1999), Sabrina Setlur, Patrice Farameh, Caroline Rocher and finally Dutch model Sharlely Kersenberg, his current girlfriend.

* It ain't easy being ginger

In this politically correct age, ginger-baiting has become the new racism.
Fair-skinned, ginger-haired people often find themselves the butt of jokes but in New Zealand, the ginger taunts come with a good-natured grin.

This is unlike in Britain, where one family claimed they were hounded out of their Newcastle home for having ginger hair.

They said thugs had bullied their children and spray-painted the slogan "gingers are gay" across a wall on the estate.

One council official had even suggested they dye their children's hair.

Skating through Cathedral Square yesterday,, flame-haired David Nelmes, 16, said he had heard most of the ginger taunts throughout his life.

"You get fanta-pants," he said.
"Ginga, that's one we all know. Carrot-top, that's old school. Gingernuts – that's not good when they're in my lunch," Nelmes said. "It doesn't bother me too much, but when you're feeling a bit down it can hurt.
"Mostly it's good-natured but it can be insulting. Anyway, I'm proud to be ginger."

St Bedes Year 11 student Leo Wall said ginger-haired boys at the school were all called names such as rusty-crutch and fanta-pants.

"I've got one friend called F. O.T. – frickin' orange thing. It's all harmless."
English photographer Charlotte Rushton published a book on redheads called Ginger Snaps.
She told reporters that of 300 subjects in the book, only two were spared from bullying over their hair colour and said she had suffered verbal abuse from complete strangers because of her own ginger locks.

Ginger jokes
Q. What's the difference between a terrorist and a redhead?
A. You can negotiate with a terrorist.

Q. What's the difference between a ginger and a brick?
A. The brick will get laid.

Q. How do you start an argument with a redhead?
A. Say something.

PROUD: David Nelmes, 16, is proud to be ginger haired.

He has heard all the ginga jokes but says they are mostly good-natured.

Christie has ginger hair and is very proud of it! She is fed up with the bullies who taunt her because of the colour of her hair. She wants to tell the world that ginger hair shouldn't be a stigma, but instead something to be proud of.

Christie is 12. She has ginger hair and is very proud of it! She is fed up with the bullying she gets because of her ginger locks and thinks it is about time she set the record straight... You shouldn't judge a book by its cover and you shouldn't judge her by the colour of her hair.

Her best friend Shannon, aged 11, thinks Christie's hair is beautiful. She is sticking by Christie in her quest to rid ginger hair of its stigma. Christie hopes her hair remains its bright red colour into her adulthood and wants to let everyone with ginger hair know that they should be ginger and proud!

* Roodharigen met uitsterven bedreigd

* Slurs against redheads no joke: 'gingerism' on the rise in Britain

Prince Harry, the redheaded royal who stands third in line to the throne, has admitted to being the victim of what appears to be a relatively new, and uniquely British, prejudice: "gingerism."

The prince told a teenager that he is bullied for being "ginger," it was reported yesterday. Ginger is a common nickname for a redhead -- or redheadedness -- in Britain. But many think of it as an insult, according to news reports, and some fear its use is becoming more barbed.

A racially-hued slight against redheads by a recently sacked British backbencher, and news stories about a Newcastle family that had to move after verbal abuse about their red hair became intolerable, have British commentators taking the notion of gingerism more seriously.

Harry's admission is bound to add fuel to the fire. At a memorial for Diana earlier this month, the prince reportedly asked 14-year-old Maxine Broadfoot, winner of an award for counselling given in his mother's name, whether she might counsel him on the bullying he gets about his red hair.

Maxine told a reporter that the remark was intended as a joke, but the prince said he was serious about being bullied. Harry's army pals have reportedly nicknamed him "Ginger Bullet Magnet."

While some argue that gingerism is just black humour no more harmful than blond jokes, others have their doubts. Classic British schoolyard taunts -- "Tut-tut ginger nut, where d'ya get you hair cut?" -- have evolved into online petitions calling for "gingers" to be segregated, shipped to concentration camps, or killed en masse.

In 2003, a 20-year-old Brit was stabbed in the back because he was "ginger." A BBC report called it the first "serious anti-red-hair hate crime."

The Chapman family of Newcastle, six redheads, has had to move five times, according to recent reports, because of abuse sparked by their hair colour. Kevin Chapman told reporters his 11-year-old son even attempted suicide as a result of bullying.

A Conservative MP, Patrick Mercer, defended racial name calling in the British military by comparing it to the name-calling directed at ginger soldiers.

"Equally, a chap with red hair, for example, would also get a hard time -- a far harder time than a black man, in fact," he told a Times of London reporter in March. He was subsequently dropped by his party.

In 2005, red-haired Reading soccer striker Dave Kitson spoke out against widespread "ginger-baiting," comparing it to racial taunts on soccer pitches. He was labelled a "ginger whinger" by a newspaper.

While redheads get singled out for teasing in a variety of cultures, it seems to be only in Britain that the stereotyping has become so intense.

Michele Eliot, an American who runs a British children's agency and has seen evidence of ginger-bullying on playgrounds, told the BBC "there is nothing like this in the U.S. (There), having red hair is not a precursor to having someone abuse you. Red hair is considered glamorous."
The evolution of gingerism in Britain may have something to do with demographics.

While less than one per cent of the human population has red hair, the largest concentrations of red-haired people are found in the Celtic states: Scotland, Ireland and Wales. About 13 per cent of Scots have red hair, and 10 per cent of Irish and Welsh. It is believed that up to 40 per cent of the population in each of these countries carries the recessive "ginger gene."

Red hair might well have become a marker for these groups, whose history with Britain's predominant English population has been checkered, says Daniel Ames, a professor of social psychology at New York's Columbia University.

If the predominant population in a society has preconceived notions about its minorities -- that this lot are shiftless or that lot belligerent -- the occurrence of a very noticeable physical trait within the sub-group, like red hair, reinforces the stereotype, he says.

"By definition, for most of us, redheads are salient. They are a minority and they're a very noticeable minority," Mr. Ames says. "The availability and the salience of the clue does feed into the use of that (trait) as a way of judging a person, a feeling we know something about what that category of person is like."

Prejudices become part of society over generations, he says.

"Stories about groups of 'them' get passed around among 'us,' and as we grow and participate in our communities and groups, we share in these accounts and explanations and they help us seem to make sense of the world. Whether they actually do that, whether they have any truth value to them, is another question."

British gingerism may also be an extreme regional form of an age-old prejudice against redheads. In The Roots of Desire: The Myth, Meaning, and Sexual Power of Red Hair, author Marion Roach recounts legends that identify Judas Iscariot and Mary Magdalene as redheads, and notes the prevalence of redheads in vampire lore.

She also points out that the mosaics in the vaulted ceiling of London's St. Paul's Cathedral portray Eve before the Fall as a blond and after the Fall as a redhead. The connection to Original Sin and loose women may partly explain the great preponderance of adult Internet sites devoted exclusively to red-haired women.

Stephen Douglas's The Redhead Encyclopedia has collected a number of less-than-flattering aphorisms about reheadedness, like the Corsican admonition to spit and turn around if you should pass a redhead on the street, or the Old English proverb to avoid the shadow of a redhead for fear of bad luck.

But if gingerism is threatening to become more than an old superstition or a crude joke in Britain, there is every reason to believe it is only a passing phase. After all, a mere four and a half centuries ago, red hair was all the rage in London.

That was when a certain ginger monarch named Elizabeth was on the throne.

* £17K for redhead jibes

A WAITRESS who was taunted by bosses and fellow workers because of her red hair won a £17,600 payout yesterday.

Sarah Primmer, 41, said other staff at the Turkish-run kebab shop goaded her about her colouring and made sexual remarks about the size of her breasts.

The mum of three said: "They asked me if my head hair was the same colour as the rest of my body hair. They thought it was funny and liked to see me going red in the face with embarrassment."

The insults hurt Sarah so much she now tries to disguise her natural colour by using blonde highlights. She said: "My hair is going lighter and lighter. It certainly is not nice to be ginger.

"I was called copper knob at school. You expect that from kids, but not when you are in your 40s."

One Turkish worker at the Portsmouth shop also regularly quizzed her about her boyfriend's private parts and their sex life.

The kebab shop's owners did not attend the hearing to contest Sarah's claims. The Exeter tribunal ruled she was sexually harassed and unfairly dismissed.

Willem Wever geeft antwoord

Vraag

* Redheads and temperatures

In a study that I would have to be paid good money to volunteer for, scientists attached heating elements (maybe something like curling irons?!) to the arms of 60 redheaded volunteers and 60 with dark hair to test their tolerance to temperature.
Redheads started reporting pain from cold temperatures at 6°C higher than dark-haired subjects. Professor Daniel Sessler, director of the Outcomes Research Institute and department of anaesthesiology at Louisville University, believes that variations in the MC1R gene may over-activate temperature-detecting genes, thus making carriers more sensitive to thermal pain.
Other special characteristics of redheads (some anecdotal):

Anaesthesia often fail or unusually high doses of local anaesthetics are required to achieve adequate analgesia in redheads.

Redheads are more resistant to the effects of lidocaine, a common local anaesthetic.

Redheads are more sensitive to ultraviolet light, which is why they burn more easily in the sun, and it predisposes them to skin cancer.

Redheads have a fiery temper, which may have helped give them the aggression they needed to survive in the harsh northern climates.

Professor Ian Jackson, from the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh, said:
Nearly half of the population in Scotland now carry the genes that code for red hair, so any disadvantage must be fairly mild or outweighed by its benefits.”

One of the benefits mentioned was that greater sensitivity to cold may have helped protect redheaded individuals in colder climates by making them seek shelter and wrap up against the elements before their dark-haired counterparts. I’m not sure I buy this person-as-thermometer explanation but I can’t come up with a better one right now.

* Is gingerism as bad as racism?

A red-haired family claims to have been driven from their Newcastle home because of abuse. Why is the harassment of redheads dismissed as just harmless fun?

Here's a joke. "What's the difference between a terrorist and a redhead?"
Here's the punchline. "You can negotiate with a terrorist."

Is this offensive? If it was made in your workplace, within hearing of a redheaded colleague, would you make a fuss? Probably not.

But mock someone's ethnicity, religion or sexuality and you will attract the beady eye of management. Make a sexist joke and prepare to be dismissed as an antediluvian relic.

Verbal abuse
Carrot-top, copper-top, ginger-nut, ginger minger, bluey (among Australians), Duracell, Ronald McDonald, Simply Red, Queen Elizabeth. And so on for hours and hours of the typical redhead's life. No wonder some gloss over their hair colour as "auburn" and "strawberry blonde" and even "titian".

Photographer Charlotte Rushton has been chronicling the UK's redheads for a book, Ginger Snaps. Of the 300 she snapped, only two have been spared bullying because of their hair. She herself has suffered verbal abuse from complete strangers.

"I was on the Tube, pregnant, and I was really humiliated by this drunk yob. He was shouting 'do the cuffs and the collars match?' He got right up into my face. You don't do that to other people."

She believes the phenomenon is long-standing and uniquely British in its most virulent form.
"In other countries redheads will get teased at school but it stops when they become adults. If you are a woman you are fiery and alluring, beautiful."

In adult life, women get stereotyped and red-haired men take much of the worst abuse. Treatment of red-haired children in school ranges from mild taunts to grim persecution.
Michele Eliot, the American director of British children's charity Kidscape, regularly has significant numbers of red-haired children in courses on coping with bullying.

There is nothing like this in the US where having red hair is not a precursor to having someone abuse you. Red hair is considered glamorous."

Bullies at school and in later life may sense that ill-treatment of the red-haired will not be treated as seriously by the authorities as persecution of other groups.
"Bullies think that person is outside the norm, they will be able to attack them. The bullies find something to pick on. The bully has a problem and needs a victim," Ms Eliot says.

Racism row
While there has been at least one report of a serious anti-red hair hate crime in the UK - a 20-year-old stabbed in the back in 2003 - it's unclear whose responsibility it is to monitor discrimination.

Conservative backbencher Patrick Mercer, when recently sacked for alleged racism, sought to get himself out of a hole by comparing treatment of black soldiers to those with red hair.
"That's the way it is in the Army. If someone is slow on the assault course, you'd get people shouting: 'Come on you fat bastard, come on you ginger bastard, come on you black bastard.'"
One of these three epithets would now be regarded as totally unacceptable, and possibly against the law. Even the first, mocking someone's weight, is under a sustained assault from feminists and those concerned about what society's treatment of weight issues does to vulnerable teenagers.

But the abuse can be far from innocuous.
"We talk about kicking racism out of sport but this is just as bad in its way," said Reading striker Dave Kitson in 2005. He can't have been delighted when the Daily Star reported his remarks under the headline "Kitson's a right ginger whinger". Or when players' association chief Gordon Taylor said: "It belittles racism to compare the two issues."

Journalist Sharon Jaffa - also a red-head - says society must stop its ginger-baiting.
"Growing up as a redhead I was lucky enough to escape with just the occasional name-calling - having the surname Jaffa was no doubt a double-whammy. But attacking someone on the basis of their hair colour can be every bit as damaging as persecuting someone for their race or religion, and therefore, in some cases, needs to be taken just as seriously."

Red hair has great cultural resonance. Red is the colour of heat, danger and warnings. When applied to women, it is the colour of sensuousness, fiery temperament and emotional instability.
"Lilith [Adam's lover] was a redhead. It indicates red hair was bad. Shakespeare made all his most menacing characters wear red wigs. That seeps into culture," Ms Rushton says.

Stress release
So when does this date from? Some claim it could be a throwback to anti-Irish sentiment from the 19th Century and before when the Irish, with a greater prevalence of red hair, were regarded as ethnically inferior.

Patrick O'Sullivan, head of the Irish Diaspora Research Unit, says he has never come across a link. "People could feel forbidden to attack their usual victims and are searching around for ones that have not yet achieved the protection of the law."

Professor Larry Ray, a sociologist at the University of Kent and an expert on racial discrimination, says the perpetrators could be habitual bullies. "If they are engaging in one kind of harassment they are engaging in others. They are looking for targets."
For those who claim their workplace taunts are just harmless banter, it could be stress rather than an anthropological aversion to red hair.

Workplace psychologist Professor Cary Cooper, of Lancaster University, says abuse can be "an unhealthy release valve for stress" and redheads, as a visible minority not protected by law, have become a target.

While other forms of the discrimination are the subject of marches, lobbying and education campaigns, redheads cannot expect the arrival of the politically correct cavalry anytime soon.

* Red-headed family forced to move after 'ginger' hate campaign

A family are being forced out of their home by a gang of thugs because of their red hair.
Kevin and Barbara Chapman say they and their four young children have already moved twice to avoid the taunts but at each address have been subjected to attacks.
Their windows have been smashed, the walls daubed with graffiti and their children physically assaulted in the street by other youths.

Daniel, Ryelle and Kevin Chapman: They say they dare not go to the shops because their tormentors steal whatever they buy

In the latest incident the family returned to their third home in Newcastle upon Tyne to find the words "ginger is gay" painted on the outside of the property.
Even as the family, all of whom have red hair, discussed a move with social workers, their windows were smashed.
They are now waiting for the city council to find them yet another home.

"It started more than three years ago, when the kids started getting bullied by lads over the colour of their hair," said 49-year-old Mr Chapman.
"They've been punched and kicked and thrown over a hedge. Every time they go out these gangs get to them.
"We can't even go to the local shops which are only two minutes away. The kids get all their stuff taken off them.
"Having ginger hair, you expect people to have a bit of fun, but this is just unbelievable."

Mr Chapman reported the incidents to police but the abuse has become so bad that one son, Kevin Jnr, 11, is now being taught at home. Mr Chapman says the boy has even tried to commit suicide. "Kevin's never even seen life yet and he's been driven to this," said the unemployed father.

"Some of the bullying is about branded trainers and clothes. I buy them what I can but truthfully the kids don't mind whether they have something with a name on."
The Chapmans, who have a ten-year-old daughter Ryelle, and sons Daniel, ten, and Jordon, 13, first moved from Walker to Newbiggin Hall to escape the prejudice.
They were forced to move again a year ago to Kenton Bar. Within weeks they were once again subjected to abuse.

"There seem to be around ten or 12 families who have relations in the different areas we have been," said Mr Chapman. "Word seems to get around and it starts again."
The children have changed schools three times in the last two years. "Every time we make new friends we end up getting bullied whenever we leave the house," said Ryelle.

Mrs Chapman, 44, said: "Wherever they go they get called "ginger nut, ginger bastard, ginger c***", it's disgusting."
A Newcastle City Council spokesman said: "We will do all we can to help the family."

* Women with red hair report a slightly increased rate of bruising but have normal coagulation tests.

Outcomes Research Institute and the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine, University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky 40202, USA.
There is an anecdotal impression that redheads experience more perioperative bleeding complications than do people with other hair colors. We, therefore, tested the hypothesis that perceived problems with hemostasis could be detected with commonly used coagulation tests.

We studied healthy female Caucasian volunteers, 18 to 40 yr of age, comparable in terms of height, weight, and age, with natural bright red (n = 25) or black or dark brown (n = 26) hair.

Volunteers were questioned about their bleeding history and the following tests were performed: complete blood count, prothrombin time/international normalized ratio, activated partial thromboplastin time, platelet function analysis, and platelet aggregation using standard turbidimetric methodology. Agonists for aggregation were adenosine diphosphate, arachidonic acid, collagen, epinephrine, and two concentrations of ristocetin.

The red-haired volunteers reported significantly more bruising, but there were no significant differences between the red-haired and dark-haired groups in hemoglobin concentration, platelet numbers, prothrombin time/international normalized ratio, or activated partial thromboplastin time. Furthermore, no significant differences in platelet function, as measured by platelet function analysis or platelet aggregometry, were observed. We conclude that if redheads have hemostasis abnormalities, they are subtle.

* Why the big chill makes redheads blue

SCOTLAND'S redheaded hordes have terrorised their enemies on battlefields from Stirling Bridge to Wembley Stadium. But that hard-as-nails reputation could be under threat following research in the US.

Scotsmen may be known for wearing nothing beneath their kilts even in the harshest conditions, but academics at Louisville University, Kentucky, say they have scientific proof that redheads are the first to wrap up against the cold.

Studies of people who carry the 'Celtic' gene responsible for red hair have shown they are more sensitive to temperature than the rest of the population. Tests showed they suffer greater pain when exposed to cold - and heat - than those without the gene.

The findings are the latest in a series of worldwide studies that have shown redheads have unique, and sometimes dangerous, genetic characteristics such as greater vulnerability to skin cancer.

In the study, the scientists attached heating elements to the arms of 60 redheaded volunteers and 60 with dark hair to test their tolerance to temperature. Remarkably, redheads began to perceive pain at an average temperature of 22°C, some 10°C higher than dark-haired people.
There was also a big difference between redheads and dark-haired people when it came to reporting unbearable pain from cold. Dark-haired subjects could withstand temperatures around freezing, 6°C lower than redheads.

"Our results confirm anecdotal evidence that redheads are more sensitive to certain types of pain," said Professor Daniel Sessler, director of the Outcomes Research Institute and department of anaesthesiology at Louisville University.

Scotland is famed for its high proportion of redheads. Around 10% of Scots are redheads, while an additional 40% of the population with other hair colours carry the gene responsible for red hair. Prominent Scottish redheads include Mary Queen of Scots, singer Lulu, news reader Jackie Bird, Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy and the actor Dougie Henshall.

TV presenter, author and celebrity redhead, Vanessa Collingridge, admitted she was particularly vulnerable to the cold. The former weather forecaster said: "I have caught hypothermia twice while filming in Scotland and that was during the summer. I am like a reptile because I am so cold-blooded.

The stereotype of a Celt is a wild, kilted man with red hair who takes no notice of the temperature. In fact most redheads don't really like extremes of temperature.

* How to get the perfect red hair

Everyone loves a redhead! Even if you have naturally red locks now, there is a great chance you go to the salon to give your tresses a boost with a toxic commercial hair dye. Consider trying a more natural solution and give your naturally red mane some help from old fashioned herbal treatments. Adding these herbal teas and natural mixtures to your hair will add subtle color, and will add the most color with daily repeated applications. The great thing about natural dyes is that they are a temporary to semi-permanent solution for increasing your color, and your hair gets to benefit from a variety of helpful vitamins and minerals.

Henna Hair Dye
Henna is probably the most popular herbal hair dye to help redden the hair. It is very effective for hair that is naturally red, but people with blonde and light brown hair can also expect semi-permanent results. To make the dye, combine 2 tablespoons crushed henna leaves with one cup just boiled water. Let the herbs soak in the water overnight, and strain in the morning. Apply to the hair and allow it to set for at least 30 minutes, but the longer the better. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual.

Coffee Rinse
Black coffee has been used by natural redheads to darken their locks and make them more vibrant. Put a strong black coffee in a spray bottle and apply to hair thoroughly. Let the hair soak in the coffee in a shower cap for 30 to 45 minutes. Rinse your hair, shampoo and condition as usual.

Rosehip Hair Enhancer
Rosehips can be made into a strong tea and soaked into hair for added red to faded natural red hair. Boil ½ cup to 1 cup of rosehips with 2 cups of water until it is reduced by half. Let the tea cool. Apply to hair, put on a shower cap and let hair soak in the solution for one hour. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual.

Red Vegetable Hair Enhancer
This treatment to brighten red hair is best done when you have a chance to get in the sun. Mix ½ cup beet juice with ½ cup carrot juice and a ½ cup radish juice. Make the juice by blending each vegetable and stringing the pulp while reserving the juice. Pour the vegetable juice over damp hair and sit in the sun or under a sun lamp for an hour. Shampoo & condition as usual. Repeat the treatment each day for a week for best results.

Hibiscus Tea Hair Treatment
A strong hibiscus tea can be used to give your locks an extra warm red hue. Boil 5 to 10 tablespoons of the herb in 2 cups of water. Reduce to one cup of water, and allow cooling. Put the tea in a plastic bottle and add the mixture to hair. Rinse it through several times, and allow it to sit on the hair for one hour.

* A prospective study on the association between red hair color and endometriosis in infertile patients

Louisville school medicine, dep. obstetrics gynecology, Louisville, ETATS-UNIS

Résumé / AbstractObjective :
To determine if red-haired infertile women have an increased prevalence of endometriosis.

Design : Prospective, nonblinded.

Setting : Large, metropolitan, private hospital, associated with a university. Subspeciality care provided by reproductive endocrinologists.

Patients : One hundred forty-three consecutive women undergoing laparoscopy or laparotomy for infertility.

Interventions : Laser ablation of any endometriosis present.

Main Outcome Measure : Presence of endometriosis.

Results : Of 143 women entered into the study, 12 had natural red hair. The ages of these women ranged between 23 and 41 years. Ten of 12 (83%) of the red-haired women were found to have endometriosis compared with 55 of 131 (42%) of nonredheads. By statistical analysis, the 95% confidence intervals for the presence of endometriosis in redheads was 55% to 100% versus 34% to 51% for nonredheads.

Conclusion : The results suggest an association between the occurrence of natural red hair and those factors that lead to the development of endometriosis.

* Ernie droomt zich af

Rood haar, arme jongen
het meisje heeft rood haar
keltische muziek, bretonse
grote stenen, stille uren
voor de open haard, tikkende
klokken, wol aan naalden
een kat en drop en min-
zaam lachen om een mop
de winters duren eindeloos en
in de nacht huilen de wolven
de beren slapen in de bergen
ergens sterft een smokkelaar

Rood haar, verdomme
het meisje heeft rood haar
rokken half over de knie
slepen over natte velden
haar oom met baard verdeelt
ruige verhalen en schudt achteloos
de diepste wijsheid uit zijn mouw
de hond, verdomt de hond
wantrouwig grijnzend
als een nachtportier
gunt je dreigend amper ruimte
zijn neus ruikt elk gevaar.

rood haar, arme dichter
het meisje heeft rood haar
roestende iron maiden
de struise dame op de barricade
het Front, verdomd het Front
haar front zal nooit bezwijken
mijn jong vergeet het maar
onder zwaarden pijl of grof geschut
Zij kent de vele lijken
maar weet niet hun getal
zo blijft zij altijd onaanraakbaar
aaaaaaah, blijf toch af mijn jongen
het meisje heeft rood haar

-Ernie, ga nou slapen Ernie,
morgen gaan we gewoon weer
boodschappen bij haar doen

-Beloof je dat Bert, beloof je dat?
In de groene winkel? In de groene winkel?

-Ja Ernie, in de groene winkel

-O fijn Bert fijn. Zucht.

-Welterusten Ernie.

-Welterusten Bert. Rood haar. Hmmm.

* Scottish redheads 'more sexually attractive'

Scotland's high proportion of redheads may be due to them being more sexually attractive, a leading skin specialist says.
Despite long being the target of music-hall comedians south of the border, red hair could simply be the result of sexual selection, according to dermatology expert Professor Jonathan Rees.
The Edinburgh University professor, in his inaugural lecture at the institution's medical school, said a single gene carried by up to 40% of Scots was responsible for red hair.

The finding was part of a study into the link between skin colour and sun sensitivity which found that although not all of those who carried the abnormal melanocortin-1 receptor were redheads, they tended to be more sensitive to sunlight.

Prof Rees said: "Our work suggests that the first human redheads walked this earth 50,000 years ago and then spread throughout northern Europe.

"Why are there so many redheads in Scotland? We cannot be certain that chance did not play a role, but we also suggest that the very obvious selection people make for their sexual partners based on physical characteristics may be relevant."

Prof Rees said the difference between people's sensitivity to ultraviolet rays varied by up to 100 times depending on their skin colour.
He added that while doctors were increasingly warning patients of the risks of skin cancer, ultraviolet radiation was being used to treat an increasingly wide range of skin diseases.

He said: "Questions for the future include not only how can we improve our current treatment and minimise the toxicity of ultraviolet, but also how can we go on making clinical discoveries to benefit the 10 or 20% of the population who suffer from skin disease."

* Dermatology - Red Hair Genetics -

There are different sorts of red hair. Some people seem to have what we call “strawberry blonde”, some bright red and some auburn. As far as we know, the genetics underlying these differences are fairly similar, in that changes in the gene referred to above, seem to be important for all sorts of red hair. However, if you have bright red hair it seems you are much more likely to carry two different copies of the gene than if you are a strawberry blonde. We are, however, not completely certain about some of the details in this particular aspect of the work.
There are some other puzzles about red hair. Some men might have red beards but dark coloured hair. This is not entirely surprising as in many mammals the front of the body is a slightly different colour to the back. In some animals, the molecular basis of this is clearly understood, as in these animals, they produce a different protein that seems to have the opposite effects to the red hair gene mentioned above. In man, we don't think this is the case, but we also observed that people who do have red beards are more likely to carry at least one different copy of the red hair gene.

Another puzzle is why hair colour changes so much during life. Most people are aware that hair colour tends to be lighter at birth and gets darker, particularly during adolescence and puberty. Apart from saying that the cells that produce melanin become more active at this period we don't understand why this is. Similarly, of course, we don't really understand greying and lightening of the hair in old age. People with red hair often have different coloured hair at different times of their life. It seems that it is more likely to be red in childhood or in early adult life, than in later life.

One medical importance of red hair is that individuals with red hair are, on average, more likely to burn in the sun and they are at an increased risk of skin cancer. The sensible advice seems to remain that since it is painful and uncomfortable to burn repeatedly in the sun, it is sensible to alter your behaviour such that you don't suffer the discomfort! On the other hand the risks of skin cancer should also be put in context. For instance if you have red hair, the medical risks don't compare with the far greater and much more serious risks from smoking and drinking large amounts of alcohol or being very grossly overweight.

We don't know with certainty when the first “red heads” walked the earth but, based on our own research, our guess is around twenty thousand years ago. In evolutionary terms, this is relatively recent, and although we can't be certain, the explanations for the development of red hair generally fall into two groups. The first, is that there may have been some advantage to having red hair and pale skin. One reason for this is that you make vitamin D in your skin, and therefore you are less likely to get rickets (vitamin D protects you against rickets) if you have pale skin and there is not much sunlight around. An alternative explanation, which some of our own work supports, is that it may have just been due to chance in that, to state it simply, nature may have been fairly indifferent to hair colour in areas of the earth without high sunshine. Diversity may rule!

* You stole my heart

* Redheads let hair down for BBC film

"I think the last time I was in a room with this many redheads was with my family," ginger-haired Irish comedian Owen O'Neill told the Princeton Redheads Society yesterday. "There's 32 of us."
O'Neill is the narrator of a new BBC documentary, "The Ginger Gene," which producer David Malone calls "a look into the future of redheaded-ness." O'Neill, Malone and an Irish film crew were in Princeton yesterday gathering footage for the film during the Redheads Society's "Ginger Gathering."

Malone found out about the Redheads Society — a campus group founded in 2004 to bring together the "minority group" of student redheads — through a simple Google search. He then got in touch with Anne Daniel, a lecturer in the English department and author of "Redheads," a book about redhead stereotypes, who referred Malone to current club president Savannah Sachs '08.

Sachs organized yesterday's "Ginger Gathering" as a chance for casual conversation with Daniel and the BBC crew about the redhead experience. About 20 "carrot-top" students gathered in the library of Cloister Inn, which was decorated with red and green balloons. Clementines, orange soda, carrots, Cheez-Its, orange Tic Tacs, ginger ale and other orange-hued and ginger-flavored snacks were served.

The "Ginger Gene" documentary investigates the genetic future of redheads in addition to stereotypes concerning them. The film crew has been traveling around the United Kingdom and the United States talking to redheads about their experiences. In the past 10 days, the crew has crossed the Atlantic four times.

Ginger-haired people make up less than five percent of the population, according to O'Neill, and since the gene for red hair is recessive, it is possible there will be no more "gingers" in just 150 years. Because redheads have always been a dramatic minority in the population, their appearances in art and literature are often heavily stereotyped.

Daniel said that she was drawn to study historical notions about redheads in 1996 while reading "Vanity Fair," the classic 19th century work by British author William Makepeace Thackeray, in which the titian-haired heroine, Becky Sharp, appears fiery-tempered and lascivious.

"Why are all the red-haired characters so scummy?" Daniel, who sports fiery locks herself, recalled asking her husband after reading Thackeray's book.

"If you're so angry about it, write a book about it," he told her.

In her book — fittingly entitled "Redheads" — Daniel surveys redheaded characters in art and literature, finding that they are often stereotyped as hot-tempered and bold. Biblical characters portrayed with red hair, such as Mary Magdalene, Judas and John the Baptist, are all marginalized outsiders, she argues. Redheaded men are seen as clown-like, as in the case of Harry Potter's sidekick, Ron Weasley, while redheaded women appear mischievous and overly sexual, like Becky Sharp.

Redheads' fiery reputations were echoed in a poem by O'Neill that he shared with the group. "We are not the roses from the lover," he said. "We are the scratches on the back."

Malone said the BBC crew wasn't sure how popular the idea would be at first, but the topic has "really captured the imagination of a lot of people." O'Neill appeared on Good Morning America yesterday, and he will be performing at the Comedy Cellar in New York City on Monday night.

The popularity of the redhead topic does not surprise Daniel. "Let's face it," she said, "we're eye-catching."

* Red hair - blessing or curse?

In the Bible:
In some biblical stories, evil is depicted by red hair. For example Judas, who betrayed Jesus for money, is described with red hair. Eve, too, is often drawn with red hair when eating the fruit of the Garden.

Middle Ages:
Red-haired women were often regarded as witches; they were persecuted and not rarely executed.

Renaissance:
In the 16th and 17th century, red hair was fashionable.

In the 19th century:
Red-haired children were "evidence" that their mother had had an affair with the devil. Many pieces of advice went around explaining what might be done against red hair. Quite often those ideas were rather unhealthy.

During the World War II:
The Nazis discussed whether two red-haired persons should be allowed to get married for fear of "degenerate" children.

End of the 20th century:
Red hair is currently considered as a sign of youth (often women from 30 onwards have their hair dyed red).

Red hair is a symbol of emancipated women and for women who sometimes and assertively act nontraditionally.

Today red hair is almost considered common. Red tints and dyes for hair are constantly in much demand.

* Red hair theories

Many theories have been advanced to explain the dislike of red hair, or to promote that dislike:

1) Red hair was disliked because of its association with the color of foxes;
2) Red hair was disliked because of its connections with the red beard of the pagan god Thor whose attributes were transferred to the Christian devil;
3) Red hair was disliked by the English and Irish because it was attributed to the conquering Danes;
4) Red hair was disliked in non-Germanic places simply because it was less common;
5) Red hair has been disliked because it is a mutation or arrested development or degenerative characteristic

None of these theories is correct. Hair that is distinctly red exists in all societies, even to a small extent in non-white racial groups; red hair is a minority feature within all societies and ethnic groups (including the Irish).

Red hair has been, and still is, looked down on, and treated with suspicion in all societies (though perhaps less so in the melting-pot of the United States) simply because it is a minority feature. And minority features, like minorities, are suspect.

Antipathy to red hair is as simple, yet as complicated as
